We are running a CPD on Trauma for our counsellors. Just one of the many ways we ensure we are up to date with best practice and can help clients with a broad range of issues in a professional manner.
This CPD session will explore approaches to trauma with an emphasis upon understandings from attachment theory. The first 40 minutes is presented on video by Gwen Adshead, who you may have been lucky enough to hear doing the Reith Lectures last year. She raises questions about different responses to trauma related to age, genetic disposition and attachment (personality) styles, as well as the nature of the trauma itself.
After discussion and a tea break we will hear from Gwen again looking at therapy with people whose trauma has left them with long term damage, often attracting a diagnostic label of Borderline Personality Disorder or Complex PTSD. She considers:
• the management of both client and therapist expectations and projections;
• being open to negative emotions and language;
• maintaining authenticity and being honest;
• the use of psycho-education and mindfulness;
• exploring embodied experience and mentalization;
• reflective practice and supervision.
