Job title:                 Development and Marketing Officer (DMO)

Self-employed:       Sessional rate £18 per hour, 18‑month contract

Arrangement:         Hybrid (remote and on‑site as required)

Hours:                    Flexible, by arrangement, initially 18 hours weekly

Accountable to:    Service Director

Base:                      Marches Counselling Service (MCS) 57 St Owen Street, Hereford, HR1 2JQ

This role is part‑funded through a grant from The National Lottery Community Fund, supporting the delivery of our community services. Hours may vary depending on organisational need and will be agreed in advance with the Service Director.

Job Purpose

This is an exciting job opportunity for a self‑employed individual, the role is hybrid involving both remote work and attendance at agreed locations when necessary.

The primary focus of the Development and Marketing Officer post is the strengthening of relationships in the community, to facilitate the marketing and publicity of the organisation alongside widening of income streams for the charity.

This will involve responding to a changing environment in a goal directed way indicated in the strategic planning of the service. Analysis of areas where development may be possible may be required.

Skills required:

  • Marketing skills, including the ability to design effective marketing materials
  • Website management experience, particularly with WordPress
  • Professional social media skills, including content creation, scheduling, monitoring, and engagement
  • Strong communication and networking abilities
  • Experience using and developing Client Management Systems
  • Proficiency with a wide range of software, such as Canva, Microsoft applications, CMS platforms, Mailchimp, and similar tools
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To work with the Service Director to implement long term strategy and short term service objectives
  • With the Operational Management Team, to facilitate the collection and analysis of data, pertaining to development needs and work along side the administrative to understand the organisation
  • Develop and maintain the Client Management System and implement the use of  excel to produce statistical reports and illustrations
  • To facilitate the Marketing Group meetings, taking minutes and agreeing agendas with the Service Director
  • Production of marketing materials in response to organisational and community need
  • Raising MCS public profile (awareness and general information)
  • Develop relationships and provide information to statutory and 3rd sector organisations (general information and referral pathways)
  • Monitoring business networks, identifying potential partner organisations and raising profile re services available to businesses (including LinkedIn, social media groups and website development)
  • Monitoring the activity of 3rd sector organisations concerned with mental health and identifying opportunities for training and supervision, along with building relationships with mental health teams and social-prescribers
  • Manage the organisation’s social media and website, creating engaging content across multiple platforms and using tools such as Canva. Proactively identify and utilise new promotional opportunities, while staying up to date with current trends, changes, and best practice in digital communication.
  • Proactively notice opportunities to strengthen and improve the organisation’s public image, ensuring consistency, professionalism, and alignment with the brand across all materials and channels.

  • Carry out all aspects of the role to a satisfactory standard and in accordance with MCS policies and procedures.
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the role as required
  • Work at all times within the ethos of MCS and in line with BACP guidelines.
