Who Am I?

We all experience different parts of ourselves at times, according to who we are with or what situation we are in. Sometimes it can feel confusing, wondering who we really are? This exercise will help you untangle the possibilities and turn what can be challenging into a strength rather than a weakness.

Evening Review – a Psychosynthesis Exercise

The different ways we express ourselves at times are sometimes seen as ‘sub-personalities’. Think about what ‘sub-personalities’ you may be aware of in yourself. Some common ones that many people recognise in themselves and in others include:

  • Critic
  • Perfectionist
  • Carer
  • Lazybones
  • Controller

Some others might be:

  • Joker
  • Scaredy-cat
  • Rebel Victim
  • Show-off

and many, many more ….

Once you have assembled your ‘family’ of sub-personalities, can you identify which one is dominant at the moment? What behaviours does she/he/it manifest? Is that appropriate for the current situation? Is it a help or a hindrance?

At the end of the day, take a few minutes to think back over what has happened, and try and identify ‘who’ was in charge at different times. Was that the best one for the job, or might it have been more helpful for another one to deal with that particular situation?

Remember to be kind to your ‘family’ – accept that they all have something to offer, even they don’t always get the timing right!
